Asia's Hepatitis B and C Outbreaks

Asia's Contaminated Blood Disaster

Across Asia the role of Transfusions being the main motor of all Hepatitis C infections is clearly documented with China seeing over 20 million infected via this route some 10% of the world's total infections.  Again as throughout Europe and the Americas a massive 60% plus drop in Hepatitis C infections occurred with the advent of blood testing for Hepatitis C.

Epidemiology of Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Highly Endemic HBV Areas in China
Li D(1), Long Y, Wang T, Xiao D, Zhang J, Guo Z, Wang B,
In China, approximately 40 million people are infected with HCV. Comparing HCV-positive and HCV-negative people, we found that the most prevalent risk factor in HCV-positive people in the general population was a history of blood transfusion.

Effect of screening for hepatitis C virus antibody and hepatitis B virus core antibody on incidence of post-transfusion hepatitis .
Japanese Red Cross Non-A, Non-B Hepatitis Research Group. . Lancet 1991;338:1040–1 Esteban JI, González A, Hernández JM, et al.
Recent reports from Japan document decreases of 60 to 80 percent in the incidence of post-transfusion non-A, non-B hepatitis after the implementation of screening of donors for antibodies to HCV in addition to, or at the same time as, screening for surrogate markers.25
