Africa's Hepatitis B and C Outbreaks

Africa's Hepatitis C and B Contaminated Blood Disaster

Across the Continent of Africa there are 100 million Hepatitis B infections and 19 million Hepatitis C infections.  This level is more than just what can be achieved by the transfusion and other contaminated health care routes.  In Africa the principal culprit for infections is Syringe Re use.

Throughout the sixties and Seventies mass use was made of Injection Gun Technology wherein children across the continent were lined up repeatedly for vaccinations.
On our right we see another major transmission route for contaminated blood.  The infamous Jet Gun.

The device opposite is a multi use syringe gun that basically can take a Hepatitis B or C infection from one child in a school having a vaccination day and share it with every other child in the school, its use especially in Africa and Asia contributed to hunderds of millions of Hepatitis B and C infections.  Just one campaign to vaccinate again a mosquito borne virus in Egypt infected 15% of the population with Hepatitis C.  You can note that Niger is celebrating with a stamp that the Guns have carried out a quick million vaccinations.

It was only 9 years later that medical science realised that equates to a million children at high risk of Hepatitis B and C.
The Use of these guns plus contaminated transfusions is clear in the swathe of 4% plus HCV positive nations on the 1999 WHO Hepatitis C Atlas of Infections.

The Atlas left details exactly how much the healthcare outbreak of Hepatitis C affected each of the worlds nations. Sadly this Atlas has seldom been seen in the UK.

The other WHO Atlas for Hepatitis B also shows the swathe across the globe wherein contaminated blood and jet guns caused the explosion of infections.
